Many designers are themselves passionate collectors. These collections not only serve as important sources of inspiration but also document their view of the world, their investigations of everyday life, and their aesthetic preferences. Alexander Girard is no exception, having collected more than 100,000 objects of folk art from all over the world. Jonathan Olivares, himself a successful industrial designer and author, has taken a closer look at designers’ collections and in 2014 staged the exhibition »Source Material« in collaboration with Jasper Morrison and Marco Velardi. Olivares will discuss the importance of collecting for designers, using a number of contemporary examples in addition to Alexander Girard. Free admission
