Art on Architecture in East and West Germany | DIGITAL TALK (DE)

Details

Our cultural memory is shaped, among other things, by our visual and architectural environment. In this talk, Andreas Ruby, Director of the Swiss Museum of Architecture, and Oliver Sukrow, Postdoc at the Institute of History of Art, Building Archaeology and Restoration at the Vienna University of Technology, talk about the social relationship to art and architecture in the GDR (German Democratic Republic) and FRG (Federal Republic of Germany), and shed light on differences between the two states. What does art in architecture tell us about the history of Germany? What significance does it have today and why should it be saved from demolition? Moderated by Erika Pinner, co-curator of the exhibition »German Design 1949–1989«, Ruby and Sukrow will also discuss Josep Renau's mural »Man's Relationship to Nature and Technology« on Erfurt's Moskauer Platz, which was reinstalled in 2019 thanks to the Wüstenrot Foundation.
