Together! How do we want to live? / OPENING TALK (EN)

What exactly does communal living and building mean? How did this form of coexistence take shape and which innovative current examples do we know? The exhibition »Together! The New Architecture of the Collective« opens with a panel discussion featuring the exhibition curators – Ilka and Andreas Ruby of Ruby Press and Daniel Niggli of the architecture studio EM2N – as well as Angelika Fitz, director of Architekturzentrum Wien, and Kieran Long, director of ArkDes (Swedish Centre for Architecture and Design). The discussion will address the possibilities of a new type of architecture based on communality and participation. Free admission, registration: events@design-museum.de

Together! The New Architecture of the Collective / OPENING

Details

The scarcity and expense of housing is continually on the rise. In recent years, new forms of communal living and building have emerged all over the world in response to this challenge. The exhibition presents the most innovative examples, illustrates new living typologies and forms of participation, and introduces architects of the movement, including ON Design Partners, pool Architekten, Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter as well as ifau – institute for applied urbanism, Jesko Fezer and Heide & von Beckerath. »Together! The New Architecture of the Collective« also draws attention to precursors of the present trend, from utopian settlements of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, to social housing projects in the 1920s, to protest movements from the 1960s to the 1980s, when the inhabitants of many major cities sought alternatives to housing shortages and real estate speculation. The exhibition features a secret revolution in contemporary architecture, examining the social and economic ideals that serve as its foundation.
